Classic Swatch Rarity

written by sxoses

To start, shapes are the most important feature, so I have ranked them in order.

Tier 1 Shapes

Three shapes: Simple, sleek, and awesome. Not much to say about these.

  • Greyscales at the top (only 2 lucky holders).

  • Two colors.

  • Three colors.

  • Don’t think pastel/chromatic or hash matter too much here. I would even say the two vs three color isn’t that crazy of a difference.

Nine shapes: A close second. There’s actually less classic 9 shapes than classic 3 shapes. Sneaky bullish and look sick.

  • Color rarity is most important for this collection. 9 shapes with rare colors will go for a lot (my order: 8 colors, 4 colors, 7 colors, then 5 and 6 colors).

  • I believe greyscale and pastel hold similar rarity, while chromatic lags slightly behind.

Four shapes: These are very aesthetic.

  • The most important attribute of the four shapes is color. 2 colors are easily the best, with 3 and 4 colors being very similar.

  • The hash debate is very interesting in this collection. Some combinations definitely look cooler than others, but at the end of the day you can rotate the image and make all sorts of displays. This seems more personal but I can see certain styles carrying more weight.

  • Palette has a slight effect on rarity but not much.

Tier 2 Shapes

Five shapes: Best of this bunch.

  • 2 color clears by a lot, the rest are pretty much the same.

  • Palette isn’t too big of a factor, but goes in its proper order (greyscale, pastel, chromatic)

Eight and six shapes: Solid.

  • These are still appealing, with rare colors holding the most value. Eight shapes with 8 colors and six shapes with 2 colors are the most rare here. Everything else is grouped together.

Seven shapes: Floor.

  • 2 colors are sick. The rest should make up the floor.

Note on palette: I wouldn’t read too into them.

  • Greyscale is the best.

  • Pastel is the second best.

  • Chromatic is the third best.

Note on colors: Definitely important, but only go so far.

  • Rarest colors in general will go for higher.

  • Color rarity is also determined by shape, so keep that in mind when picking your swatch.

Note on hashes: Super underrated.

  • 1/1 hashes are sick and many don’t realize they have them.

  • 1/2 hashes are also cool and many don’t realize they have them.

  • Smaller hash collections are better, but they aren’t as important as other characteristics to me. I would slot 1/1 among the top of tier one and 2/2 among the bottom of tier one. Smaller groups would be in between the two tiers. Certain ones may be higher or lower depending on other characteristics.

There will definitely be a greater price discrepancy in the future, and I hope this helped you all. I’ve seen some crazy cheap pickups for rare pieces. At the end of the day, buy what speaks to you. My recent 3 shape purchase reminded me of my two siblings, and I knew I needed to own it. Rarity is important, but it can only get you so far. Happy swatching!
